Hire Purchase Act To Be Amended - Ismail Sabri

Repossessor will lose job.

The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism will soon amend the Hire Purchase Act to protect consumers against action taken against vehicle owners who default monthly installments.

Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Hire Purchase Act need to be amended as the current one gives too much advantage for banks to impose all kinds of charges on consumers when they fail to pay up their installments.

"For example, when a bank repossesses a car from the owner for not paying up installments, the owner will face all sorts of charges when reclaiming the car.

"Among the charges imposed are for towing, outstanding installment amount and payment for storage," he told reporters after meeting 40 representatives from Non-Governmental consumer associations here Wednesday.

The amendments will give the consumers better rights when faced with such situations and prevent the banks from imposing unreasonable charges, he said.

Former colleague makes police report on Azmin Ali

A former secretary to Anwar Ibrahim today lodged a police report on the purchase of shares amounting to RM2 million by PKR vice-president Azmin Ali and his wife.Anuar Shaari, 40, made the report at the Commercial Crime Investigation Department at Bukit Aman.
Anuar, who served Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for two years from 1996, was accompanied by several members of the Permuafakatan Ummah (Pewaris) and Badan Amal Tarbiah Sejagat (Batas).
“I handed a copy of the original document on the ownership of the shares … to find out the truth because based on the document that I have, it looks like the original, but I’m not an expert to prove it,” he told reporters.
“I’m linking Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim because the document was dated 1992-1994 when Anwar was the Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, and Azmin Ali was also Anwar’s secretary then,” he said. —Bernama

Malaysia has lost edge as low-cost producer, says World Bank

Malaysia risks missing its goal of becoming a high-income nation as it has lost its edge as a low-cost producer and lacks the investment to compete in more advanced industries, the World Bank warned today.
In its first country report on Malaysia, the Washington-based body also said that as a trade-dependent country, Malaysia should not unwind its RM67 billion in economic stimulus as that could choke off a nascent recovery.
According to World Bank data, private investment in Malaysia fell to 12 per cent of gross domestic product in 2008 compared with 30 per cent prior to the Asian crisis.
The bank was, however, less optimistic on the government’s plans to slash the budget deficit in 2010 to 5.6 per cent of GDP, forecasting that it would be 6.4 per cent of GDP. - Reuters
